Jamie's Joy is a proud sponsor of Traffic Victim's Remembrance Day.
The family helped to organize the event and will read some poetry at TVRD.
If you are able please plan to give blood on this date. Oct. 17th, 2004. It
would be great to do it at the event as we have a blood mobile coming but
wherever you can give, it would be great. Blood supplies are low in SD County
and every community needs blood donors. If you’ve never given before let Jamie’s
courage be yours and ask him to come with you. He’d be happy to hold your hand
during the experience. Anyway, from a needle-chicken person it’s really not that
bad.
City, County and State governments proclaim October 17th, 2004 Traffic
Safety Awareness Day and honor traffic victims at the 5th annual Traffic Victims
Remembrance Day, an event being held at Balboa Park, Prado Patio B from 11
a.m. and 2 p.m on Sunday October 17th, 2004. . The event will be informational,
educational and touching. It will feature speakers giving their personal stories
in an effort to convey the real effects of traffic tragedies. First responders
and traffic safety professionals will give their expertise to educate the public
on a variety of traffic related issues from bike safety to driving tips. The
event will be a “health fair” style experience fit for the whole family to
attend. Inspirational speakers and informational booths will be alongside, live
music, refreshments, poetry reading, art expression, face painting, give-a-ways,
prizes and special tributes to those affected by traffic crashes. The
Red Cross
will provide a Blood Mobile for donations. People are invited to bring photos
and other mementoes to honor their loved ones to on the memory board. The
participants will construct a TVRD quilt during the event.
The World Health Organization focused on traffic safety for it’s 2004 annual
report. They estimated that 1.2 million people died world wide in 2002, 5 times
that number was injured in the same time period. Yet, as a society we rarely
talk about this massive killer. Why? Perhaps it is because we are so dependant
on our cars and don’t think we can do anything to make our drive safer. That is
where we are wrong. Traffic Victims Remembrance Day is an important community
event because we all face the hazards of driving nearly everyday and there are
things that can be done to reduce the risk of harm on our roads. Join us on
October 17th at Balboa Park to be part of this educational campaign and movement
to create a safer community. San Diego can be safer place to live and drive.
The event is a time for San Diegan’s to raise their awareness by taking a moment
to pause and remember those people who have been involved in traffic tragedies.
In addition to family members, city county and state officials, first responders
such as law enforcement, fire and rescue agencies,
Mothers Against Drunk Driving
(MADD), Crisis Intervention Programs, Assoc. of Traffic Schools,
Jenna Druck
Foundation, Life Sharing and other local agencies will convey their stories and
educate the public on the many aspects of traffic safety.
The organizers of TVRD know first hand that the societal loss and personal
tragedies of traffic crashes cannot be quantified. But if by our efforts at
public outreach, training and knowledge dissemination any deaths can be
eliminated and number of injuries can be reduced then it is worth the effort.
Traffic Victims Remembrance Day is supported by contributions from families,
local business and the general public interested in traffic safety awareness.
Donations are welcome.
The fifth annual Traffic Victims Remembrance Day is being hosted by the Renee’
Eleonor Dawson Memorial Foundation. Renee’s parents created the foundation after
she was killed in a traffic crash in January of 2001 while driving home from
high school in Valley Center. The mission of the Renee’ Eleonor Dawson Memorial
Foundation is to promote traffic safety education and outreach especially to
young drivers. We also promote organ & tissue donation awareness through public
education.
