In 2003 a committee of friends formed to continue Jamie's Legacy. The group decided to create a memorial fund through the San Diego Foundation. We transferred the balance of the donations that were made in Jamie's name when the tragedy first struck. We continue to receive donations over time.  Some have made this part of their regular giving and tithe. Below is a list of specific grant recipients of Jamie's Joy Fund. This is the published bio in the San Diego Foundations Annual Report for Jamie's Joy Memorial Fund.

Elene and Mychael established the Jamie’s Joy Fund in memory of their 5-year-old son, Jamie , who was killed in a tragic auto accident.  Instantly they knew that instead of flowers, family and friends could make contributions to a memorial fund that would honor Jamie through its giving. Thus the Jamie ’s Joy Fund was created in loving memory of a boy whose life and good works were cut short on the physical plane, but whose spirit continues to inspire and give.  The fund seeks to enrich the lives of all living beings by supporting activities and organizations that promote joy, love, connection and peace- attributes expressing the best of Jamie.

Jamie was very young, but a very enlightened child who touched all who knew him. He was and is the type of person who could change the world, to make it a better place. Perhaps Thoreau described the mission best when he said, “On the death of a friend, we should consider that the fates through confidence have devolved on us that task of a double living, that we have henceforth to fulfill the promise of our friend’s life also, in our own, to the world.” To learn more about all the aspects of Jamie’s Joy and the specific types of organizations supported please visit www.jamiesjoy.org

It is the intention of the committee to give an annual donation at the time of Jamie's Birthday in May to a non-profit organization through the San Diego Foundation in Jamie's name.  You can be part of his ongoing living legacy.

In 2007 for Jamie's 11th Birthday - Connection

In 2007, we  celebrated Jamie by honoring “connection”. We honored not only our connection with Jamie, but our connection with each other and all that is.

In the spirit of connection, Jamie’s Joy Fund made a donation to the Smile Train. Maybe you remember Jamie’s infectious smile. The Smile Train gives an opportunity for children around the world born with cleft palate to have a wonderful smile. Besides bringing a smile to their faces, the surgery performed also can help them regain the ability to eat and speak properly. Please go to the website. It’s an amazing organization. 100% of donations go to programs.

One of the first organizations Jamie’s Joy gave to was Responsibility. Responsibility runs a school in Tijuana in the midst of the municipal dump. David Lynch and his group have educated over 3500 children in a place where previously most children spent their days picking through refuse. It is a wonderful organization. Take a look at Responsibility’s website for more info. We have reconnected with that organization this year by donating, through the Jamie's Joy Memorial Fund, to support a student in David's school for one year.

We also continued our annual giving to Save The Children.

Jamie's mom and friends took a Baja Fun Ride in Jamie's Honor.

In 2006 for Jamie's 10 Birthday

As we continue to process through the changes of loss, the advisory committee of the Jamie’s Joy Memorial Fund has chosen to focus on Jamie’s forever nature of “LOVE” as the theme of giving for 2005.  The following organizations have been chosen as this year’s recipients of the Jamie’s Joy Grant due to their dedication to bringing joy to children in trying circumstances.

Children’s Hospital of San Diego is the hospital where Jamie was cared for at his time of transition.  Jamie’s Joy will sponsor a concert featuring Karl and Jeanne Anthony www.karlanthony.com hosted by the Hope Bereavement Support Program. This will be on April 27 and has become an annual event.  It is open to the public. www.chsd.org to get the schedule for this annual concert event.

The I Am Foundation www.iamfoundation.org provided, Yo Soy, a book of affirmations in Spanish that will be donated by Jamie’s Joy to the Language Academy for the fourth grade class that Jamie would have been in.

Fran DeVoss, Jamie's Grandmother, recorded a CD of Lullabies.  Jamie’s Joy will donate them to The Neighborhood House Head Start Program.  They will be distributed to every site in San Diego County.

Its Just For Kids  www.itsjustforkids.org  is an organization that sponsors volunteer groups to go to Cuba and build playgrounds.  Jamie’s mom went in 2005 and felt Jamie's presence so strongly that Jamie’s Joy will be sponsoring the organization for this year’s trip in June.

In 2005 for Jamie’s 9th Birthday- Joie de Vivre

We celebrated Jamie’s 9th birthday with a concert at Children's' Hospital on the Oncology and Orthopedic Ward. Karl and Jeanne Anthony performed their interactive all-time favorite children’s songs with an audience in the day room and then went room to room for those children who were unable to come out. The kids were delighted and uplifted.

We had a quiet gathering in our home to sing "Happy Birthday" and commemorate the day with family and friends. Jamie’s legacy of Joy was also highlighted this year with the gift of books and lullaby tapes made available to Children’s Hospital, The Language Academy, and the Southwest Region of Unity Churches Kids Camp. The books were provided by the I AM Foundation and the lullaby tape was not only produced but also sung by Jamie’s grandmother Fran DeVoss.
