Dear Jamie,

Happy 8th Birthday, son!

I turned on the radio this morning and had a fleeting thought that maybe I’d hear that it’s your birthday. Before my fantasy ended, I imagined the reporters on Morning Edition would mention some things about you, so everyone would know how cool a kid you are, and so people could understand what we lost when you were killed.

We are spending the day with you, even though you won’t be with us in your body. We are going to the Language Academy where Karl and Jeanne Anthony will sing to all your friends. They are doing two concerts in your memory and are playing to 800 kids!

Later today, we will gather together with friends at our house and remember you, with tears and laughter I’m sure.

I continue to grow in my love for you. I miss you so much.

Love,
Your Dad
