CURLY NAKED FEARLESS JAMIE!
This is how I will always remember Jamie: When Carl and I lived in San Diego for the year before we got married, I delighted in seeing Jamie on occasion when Elene and I worked on Family Group material for the Adults of Unity conference. Sometimes she and Jamie would come to my house, sometimes I would go to theirs.
One night in particular, I was on my way over from work, and it was COLD. As an east coast person, I had still not got it quite right with those San Diego nights. I never seemed to have a jacket in my car when I needed it. So on the way over to their house, I made a quick stop home to pick up a sweater to keep in my car once and for all. I call it my San Diego sweater even now.
When I arrived, there was Jamie and his wild beautiful curls dancing around naked. Elene explained with a simple shrug, "He doesn't like to wear clothes." He spent almost the entire evening naked, naked in the most unselfconscious way: watching TV, eating dinner, pushing his trucks on the floor, doing all the usual things a little boy does, just -- naked. Meanwhile, I was eyeing the room, surely they have a fireplace in here, right?
Later that night, when it was almost his bedtime, Jamie wanted me to see his room. He had these great bunk beds, and he promptly climbed to the top bunk and, without warning, flung himself down into my arms. So fearless and trusting, it never crossed his mind that I could miss.
Jesus said we need to be like little children. I think being like Jamie is exactly what he meant: Unselfconscious, full of life, fearless and trusting that we will be taken care of. And not letting it cross our minds that it could be otherwise.
I love you all and wish I could be with you. Elene, Mychael and Danielle, I know God will take care of you, it couldn't be otherwise.
Love,
Carol, Carl and Angela Camenisch
